What is biblical femininity and why does it matter to Christian women?

I know you're not new to femininity, but femininity has gotten a bad reputation, so it’s not surprising that we can lose track of the finer details of femininity.

And but I do think a lot of the issues we have in society have to do with our views on femininity and masculinity.

Especially from a Christian perspective. So in this post, I hope to go into why we believe biblical femininity should matter to you as a Christian woman.

What is biblical femininity?

At its most basic core, biblical femininity is qualities and attributes that are characteristics of women and girls as defined by the bible.

Or in other words, being biblically grounded in what it means to be a woman of faith. And if you're familiar with the bible, you’ll find only a handful of scriptures on how to be womanly -which we’ll touch on here.

And if you’re not that familiar, don’t worry, you will have all you need to know. Stick with us

And Why Should You Care About Femininity or biblical femininity?

And I get it. I have been hesitant about publishing this type of context because of the legalistic debates that surround women in the bible.

But since the rise of the soft life and trad life phenomenon, femininity has also seen its rise in interest. And it’s no surprise - if you’re like us - growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, being a woman was rebranded to being a “girlboss”. Someone who defined life as she saw it to be. She dominated the corporate world, meetings and defined life as she wanted it to.

She was cheered and encouraged to be everything else being a stay at home mom or wife - why would she relegate herself to such pitiful roles? Why would she lose her power and become oppressed by a man?

And many of those women slowly started waking up to realize that we were sold a dream that became a nightmare…

As many of us become successful, out-earning and outpacing our male counterparts, we realize that something is missing.

We’ve been taught that we can do anything and everything and we don’t need a man to rely on…

And unfortunately, this message has been slowly creeping into the church. The rise of biblical womanhood and christian femininity all speak to a desire we have a modern day woman to figure out what is true and what is just another trend.

So, deep diving into the bible, we decided to discuss the truth. And the truth is, men and women were created to need each other. God created male and female both to be complementary - and that’s what femininity and masculinity is all about.

"God created male and female both to be complementary - and that’s what femininity and masculinity is all about. "

It has little to do with individuality as it has to do with community.

So, while we can’t convince you to care about femininity, our hope is to give you some compelling reasons why Christian women should think about it…

Why Biblical Femininity Matters

  • Reason #1 It honors God
  • Reason #2 It celebrates our purpose as woman

  • Reason #3 It redefines our goals

Important to Note: Biblical femininity does not supersedes salvation. We’re all sinners, who need a Savior. And through Jesus’s work on the cross, we are redeemed and made new and only by accepting what Jesus did on the cross. Femininity and Masculinity does not heal or save us, Jesus does!

Biblical Femininity Examples In the Bible

Genesis 2

Now, let’s get into the bible. The first introduction to a woman begins in Genesis 2. God created man first, placed him in the garden and instructed him to rule and reign -

'The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” 'The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

Genesis 2:15-19

God brings all the animals to Adam to name, and we’re told that for Adam, no suitable helper was found.

'...So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man. The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.'

Genesis 2:20-25

What is important to note is that women was first created to be a suitable help for man. Now, oftentimes, the word -helper- has a negative connotation to it. But as Christians, the helper was also used to reference the Holy Spirit.

When Jesus is talking with his disciples, he mentioned the Holy Spirit as being the helper.

And we would not think fo the Holy Spirit as an inferior entity

But the point I want to make is that women were created for men. So we can infer that as biblically feminine women, being relational is important. Now, this image was before sin entered the world but we do see what the ideal goal for women and men was - to come together and have families. But in our modern day context, we recoil at the very thought of it.

And this is what the modern day world gets wrong, relationships aren’t meant to edify us, but bless others around us.

God created Eve for Adam, and we see that over and over. Women, we tend to be relationally driven for a purpose. Adam was focused on dominion, God brought him the animals to take name and yet he could not find companionship in his work or the wild animals he “tamed

And soon as Adam has his declaration, it feels like there’s a pause in the narration and we’re told that, That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

We’re watching the complementary nature come together to create one whole being.

And it’s also important to note, God created Adam, and has a relationship with Adam. God created Eve, and has a relationship with Eve (ie he brought her to Adam) before the two have a relationship with each other.

And as Christians, that’s the model we should follow.

Our biblical femininity should reflect and honor our relationship with God through Jesus Christ.

Proverbs 31

Another key area where we see biblical definitions of womanhood is in proverbs. In particular, proverbs 31.

And I’d encourage you to read the entire chapter because it’s beautiful, but let’s focus on the last verses.

'She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future. When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness. She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness. Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her: “There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!” Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised. Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.'

Proverbs 31:25-31

So, I have come to love Proverbs 31. We are seeing a beautiful image of a Godly woman working hard to provide for her family, successful at it, while being present for her husband and children.

Charm is deceptive and beauty does not last but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.

And that’s why we value biblical femininity because it celebrates our purpose as a woman. This is just one example of biblical feminine woman but we see a pattern - a woman who fears the Lord is greatly praised.

A biblical woman who finds herself in the Lord is able to be all that God creates for her to be because she is reunited with her maker.

1 Timothy 2

Ok, so the last verse that we’re going to tackle is 1 Timothy 2. And usually theses verses gets a lot of attention because Paul is basically instructing Timothy about this church - whether or not they should let women teach.

'Women should learn quietly and submissively. I do not let women teach men or have authority over them. Let them listen quietly. For God made Adam first, and afterward he made Eve. And it was not Adam who was deceived by Satan. The woman was deceived, and sin was the result. But women will be saved through childbearing, assuming they continue to live in faith, love, holiness, and modesty.'

1 Timothy 2:11-15

And there has been a lot of talk in the Christian commentaries about who these letters were for? Were these letters addressed to a particular church or the church at large?

But what I think are important is how Paul is addressing these women in the passage.

Woman was deceived, and sin was the result. But women will be saved through childbearing, assuming they continue to live in faith, love holiness and modesty’

It feels like Paul was attacking the prideful nature behind these women that basically stated that women deserved to the role that men had because we should be able to do so.

Men do it after all. And recall, the order that these women were challenging wasn't societial, but God's order. And that's why Paul responded with the fact that women was deceived but women will be saved through childbearing, assuming they continue to live in faith, love, holiness and modesty.

And there are so many different commentaries out there - one that tends to be more common was that after the fall in Genesis, women was put under a curse - the pain of childbearing and so Jesus, being the savior of the world, was born of a virgin and therefore redeeming the curse placed on a woman.

If you look closely, you’ll see another term used to define women, and that’s modesty - but not modesty as in fashion.

The Greek word for modesty is aidos, which means humility.

Which brings us back to the heart of biblical femininity - a woman who has a heart after the Lord, who fears the Lord.

And that’s the biblical femininity  we celebrate today. We do not celebrate an individualized version of femininity that talks about empowering women to be the best version of themselves, but rather a femininity that surrenders her desires to God and seeks out His will for her life.

Key takeaways

Biblical femininity is basically a woman who has a heart after the Lord. Who desires to serve God first in whatever context he places her.

It is not vital to our salvation. Femininity cannot heal us or save us. Jesus can!

However, as Christians, being more biblically feminine allows us honors God, It celebrates our purpose as woman and It redefines our goals with His!

At Tiana Bay, we believe that dressing feminine is more than clothes. It's about embracing our God-given femininity, how we feel about ourselves and how we show up in the world. Growing up, my sister and I struggled to find soft feminine clothing that reflected the women we wanted to become. So, we started a feminine clothing brand to help you feel soft, delicate and beautiful while challenging the negative cultural stereotypes. We want to help you celebrate the strength and beauty that lies within a woman who knows she was born for such a time as this.
